The stakes at next year’s Travelers Championship will be higher than usual, according to a report from Golfweek, with “elevated” purses of at least $20 million.
Golfweek reported Tuesday that the PGA Tour is set to announce that four additional tournaments, including the Travelers Championship, will have elevated status in 2023, meaning larger-than-ordinary purses with more than $20 million in winnings and top players competing.
Golfweek’s report said that the tour plans to tell players the specifics about the events later this week.
In addition to Travelers, the new elevated tournaments are: the WM Phoenix Open; the RBC Heritage; and the Wells Fargo Championship.
The PGA will now have 13 tour events with elevated purses, according to Golfweek. The report, which sites several unnamed sources, indicates that the newly elevated events will be on an annual rotating basis. The higher purses come as the PGA Tour faces significant competition from the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour, which has poached a number of top PGA Tour players, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith and Bryson DeChambeau.
This year’s Travelers Championship generated more than $2.5 million to benefit more than 130 charitable organizations. The annual tournament donates 100% of its net proceeds to nonprofits. This year’s primary beneficiary was The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, which provides a traditional summer camp experience for children with serious illnesses.
The annual event has raised more than $25 million for more than 800 local nonprofits since Travelers became title sponsor in 2007.
The 2023 Travelers Championship will take place June 19 to 25 at TPC River Highlands.
