Stratford-based Sikorsky Aircraft confirmed today it is cutting 3 percent of its global work force, but did not say how jobs would be lost in Connecticut, The Connecticut Post reports.
The company cited moderating global growth trends as the reason for the reduction, the paper reported Thursday on its Web site.
Globally, Sikorsky employs about 18,000, according to Sikorsky’s website. That would mean be a job loss of about 540Â people.
“Today we initiated the process by informing our employees in Connecticut and Poland of this difficult decision,” Paul Jackson, a Sikorsky spokesman said via email.
Analysts say they see staff reductions at Sikorsky and other defense contractors as an attempt to get out in front of reduced defense budgets and longer lead times for aircraft deliveries.
The new cuts are the latest in a series of job loss at Sikorsky.
In July, less than a month after announcing plans to cut 386 jobs at its New York Black Hawk finishing plant, Stratford-based Sikorsky Aircraft’s after parts subsidiary trimmed its workforce in Connecticut.
Sikorsky Aerospace Services, which provides logistical support and spare parts, cut about 39 jobs across the country, including an undetermined number of positions in Shelton and Stratford, sources at the company said.
