Report: Offshore wind industry offers major opportunities for CT manufacturers

A recently published report about the state’s offshore wind production says Connecticut already has many assets required for the industry to thrive, but more work needs to be done.

The report, “Embracing the Potential of Offshore Wind in Connecticut – A Study of Opportunities and Challenges,” published Dec. 22, says the state should invest in workforce development and leverage manufacturing opportunities to support the industry.

McAllister Marine Engineering LLC, of Rhode Island, conducted the research for the report. It was commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut, Ørsted and Eversource.

The report says New London’s proximity to offshore wind lease sites and its deep-water port are the most significant attractions to the industry in Connecticut. Bridgeport would also be attractive to offshore wind developers, the study says.

The study also found that the local supply chain already serving General Dynamics Electric Boat and the state’s aerospace manufacturers, like Pratt & Whitney, makes Connecticut a prime location to serve as a hub for East Coast offshore wind projects.

The report says the state should utilize those existing manufacturers to see if they can pivot toward also supplying parts and materials to the offshore wind industry. Connecticut should also encourage businesses to set up new, high-tier manufacturing facilities in the state to assist the industry.

Investment in workforce development to grow the amount of skilled workers for the offshore wind industry is also important, the study says.
