Hartford area workers’ average wages in May 2016 topped $28 an hour, exceeding the national average, according to federal labor statistics.
The national average in May 2016 was $23.86, about 18 percent lower than the Hartford region’s mean, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) annual occupational employment report.
Hartford area wages for some 37,550 workers in the business and financial sectors averaged $37.83 per hour compared with $36.09 an hour for their counterparts nationally, the BLS said.
Management earned $60.40 an hour in the Hartford area, compared with a national average of $56.74, according to the report.
Local employment was more highly concentrated in management and business and financial operations compared to nationwide distribution. These workers also tended to earn more. For example, insurance underwriters were employed at 5.3 times the national rate in the Hartford region, averaging $38.21 per hour.
Regionally, concentrations in transportation and material moving were lower than the national average.
