Report: Essex lighting firm weighs Portland move

Specialty Lighting Group in Essex is considering buying the vacant Smurfit-Stone Container property in Portland as new headquarters for its wholesale-distribution operation, Patch.com reports.

The company is currently based at 35 Industrial Park Road in the Essex’s Centerbrook section, Patch.com reported Friday.

The Smurf-It complex at 74 Pickering St., in Portland’s industrial park. has been empty for three years since the company filed for bankruptcy in January 2009. The plant once employed 93.

The 175,000-square-foot building on 11.4 acres is listed at $1.45 million, Patch.com reports.

Specialty Lighting CEO Dan Carroll has asked Portland for tax breaks to offset the cost of buying and renovating the facility.

The company has an additional warehouse in Old Saybrook. Forty-three of its 50 employees are in Connecticut, with the rest spread among sales offices in New York, New Jersey, Orlando, Fla., Columbus, Ohio, and San Francisco.
