Report: CT student borrowers’ average debt drops in 2016

Connecticut’s 2016 college graduates had the fourth highest average student debt in the nation, though it fell 12 percent from a year ago, according to a new national report by LendEDU.

The average debt per borrower in Connecticut last year was $23,326 compared to $36,864 in 2015, the highest in the country at the time.

About 60 percent of 2016 grads had college debt, the report found. States with higher 2016 debt than Connecticut are, highest first, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Delaware.

LendEDU’s Student Loan Debt By School By State Report was created using the newest Peterson’s financial aid data for 1,161 colleges and universities in the United States. The college-level debt and proportion of borrowers were used to calculate state averages and are estimates.
