Report: CT child poverty up 50 percent since 1990

The number of Connecticut children living below the poverty line has increased 50 percent over the past 25 years, according to a report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

More than 40 percent of youths in the state are living with families that spend 30 percent or more of their income in housing. That ranked Connecticut 43rd in the country.

The percentage of children living in high-poverty neighborhoods has also nearly doubled since 1990, the report said.

There were some positive notes: Graduation rates and test scores have both increased over that period, according to the report, which also noted that the state has the highest number of children who attend preschool and the lowest child death rate in the country.
