Report: CT among best prepared for climate change

A first-time analysis of the country’s preparedness for climate-driven, weather-related threats concluded that Connecticut is in the top five most-prepared states.

“States At Risk: America’s Preparedness Report Card” was released this week by nonprofit news organization Climate Central and consulting firm ICF International.

The report gave Connecticut an “A-” grade. Four states received an “A,” including Massachusetts.

The report assessed the threats of extreme heat, drought, wildfires, inland flooding and coastal flooding. It considered actions states were taking to reduce current risks, assess vulnerability to future risks, plan and attack for future risks.

The report had the following to say about the Nutmeg State:

“Connecticut faces considerable and significantly increasing threat levels from extreme heat, inland flooding, and coastal flooding between now and 2050. Connecticut scored an overall grade of A- on the Report Card, with grades ranging from an A for extreme heat and inland flooding to a B for coastal flooding. The grades are relative to other states, and relative to the magnitude of the climate threats themselves. Connecticut has taken strong action to address these current climate risks, and a fair amount of action that aims to address its future risks, particularly with regards to coastal flooding.”

Connecticut has created a hazard mitigation plan, a climate preparedness plan, and has assessed shoreline and inland flooding risks, the report noted.
