Nearly 77 percent of Connecticut small businesses with fewer than 25 employees will be eligible for health insurance tax credits established by the new federal health care reform law, according a report released Tuesday by the consumer health organization Families USA.
The tax credit program, which is meant to help pay the cost of employee health coverage, targets small employers with up to 25 workers.
In Connecticut, 44,000 small businesses will qualify for the credit in 2010, according to the report. Nationally, more than 4 million small businesses-83.7 percent-are eligible for the credit.
The report also notes that 12,900 Connecticut small businesses will qualify for the maximum tax credit of 35 percent. These are businesses that employ 10 or fewer workers who earn an average wage of less than $25,000, and traditionally have the most difficult time affording insurance, the report said.
