Sodexo, concessions operator at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, will launch its recycling and composting program with a limited trial at Saturday’s University of Connecticut vs. North Carolina football game.
Food waste, soiled paper, and biodegradable serviceware will be collected during the game from specific stadium seating areas, including the luxury suites and the press box.
“Sodexo is committed to working with our customers and clients to take action that is good for the environment,” said Joanne Gagnon, Sodexo general manager at Rentschler. “Recycling and composting the tons of trash generated at UConn football games will help to significantly reduce waste.”
Staff from the Northeast Recycling Council and state Department of Environmental Protection will assess the cleanup and advise Sodexo how to expand the composting and recycling to all parts of the stadium, including concessions and public areas.
To make the separation and collection of organics easier, Sodexo has begun serving biodegradable food service containers made from paper. Sodexo also will be separating recyclables and food waste at its catered special events during the year.
