Remade E. Hartford building to house medical-apparel vendor Nixon Uniform

Nixon Uniform Service & Medical Wear paid $2.45 million for an East Hartford industrial building gutted by fire four years ago from which to ply its rental medical apparel and linens.

The Newark, Del., company bought the 53,000-square-foot building at 71 George St. from New Boston Fund Inc. The space previously was leased to office-furniture provider BKM Enterprises, since relocated to 49 Regent St. in Manchester.

New Boston Fund bought the building in 2008, but in November 2009 the structure was severely damaged in a five-alarm fire.

Originally built in 1954, the burned-out edifice was rebuilt to modern design and energy-efficiency standards and building codes, a New Boston Fund spokesman said. With the town expediting permits and other clearances, the building reopened to occupancy less than six months later, in May 2010.

The building is comprised of 8,000 square feet of office space and 45,000 square feet of 28-foot, high-bay warehouse space. It has five loading docks, two drive-in doors and 51 parking spaces.
