Gov. M. Jodi Rell says the state budget deficit has doubled from last month, to more than $300 million.
Much of the increase is being blamed on a $75 million drop in personal income tax collections. The state also expects to receive $20 million less from its share of the slot machine revenues from Connecticut’s two tribal casinos.
Rell says revenue from other taxes, including the sales and cigarette taxes, also has slowed.
Rell says that while Connecticut is still in better financial shape than its neighboring states, she is considering making additional budget cuts.
Rell has cut state spending by about $140 million in recent months. She also imposed a state hiring freeze and a travel ban.
