Gov. M. Jodi Rell has nominated a former prosecutor from Massachusetts as the state victim advocate.
Michelle Cruz of South Hadley is currently a lawyer in Hartford. She also was assistant district attorney in Hampden County in Massachusetts for six years.
The victim advocate serves as liaison between victims of crime and the state’s criminal justice system and evaluates how state services are provided to victims.
The victim advocate also recommends systemwide improvements to lawmakers, works with private and public agencies to enforce victims’ constitutional rights and advocates for victims in court.
Cruz’s appointment is effective next week and requires approval by the General Assembly.
James Papillo, the current victim advocate, is not seeking reappointment.
