Gov. M. Jodi Rell said last week she is worried about covering additional families through Connecticut’s HUSKY health insurance program when President Bush is calling for federal funding cuts.
“I don’t want to proceed by saying, ‘Let’s put more individuals on this type of plan,’ unless we know that we have the money coming,” said Rell, who recently returned from a National Governors Association meeting in Washington, D.C.
Governors have pleaded with the Bush administration to increase funding for State Children’s Health Insurance Program, which helps pay for HUSKY and insures millions of children of the working poor across the country. Connecticut’s HUSKY program also covers some parents.
Many Connecticut Democrats this session want to expand eligibility under HUSKY and Medicaid, hoping to cover more of the estimated 70,000 uninsured children and 300,000 uninsured adults in the state. (AP)
