Pratt & Whitney Co. and Airbus say U.S. and European aviation overseers have certified Pratt’s geared turbofan engine to propel Airbus’ A320neo jetliner.
The so-called “joint type certification’’ issued by the Federal Aviation Administration and the European Aviation Safety Agency means Airbus can become the first to begin commercial delivery of Pratt-powered A320neos to airlines and other aviation customers.
The A320 is the first airframe to be certified with Pratt’s fuel-efficient and less-noisy PurePower engines. The PurePower alone previously was certified by aviation authorities.
Other airframe makers, including ones in Canada, Brazil, Japan and Russia, have said they, too, will equip their regional-jet fleets with Pratt’s PurePower.
