Regents Chair Robinson resigns

Lewis J. Robinson, chairman of the Board of Regents for Higher Education, has resigned, the board announced this morning.

Robinson was appointed in 2011 by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. Today’s announcement did not say why Robinson resigned.

Under Robinson’s leadership, the board set a policy for transfers and articulation, implemented a remedial student development program, developed the system’s first strategic plan, hired 47 faculty members and hired a new president, Gregory W. Gray.

Gray praised Robinson in a statement.

“Personally, I am disappointed to lose his leadership, but I understand and respect his decision, and with all good organizations, we have a succession plan built into our system,” Gray said.

Vice Chair Yvette Meléndez will assume the role of acting chair until Malloy appoints a new chairman.

The board oversees 17 state colleges and universities and is responsible for setting tuition rates and fees, establishing financial aid policies, approving academic programs and hiring campus presidents.
