TITLE: COO, Individual Segment
COMPANY NAME: Cigna
COMPANY’S LOCATION: Bloomfield
RESIDENCE: Avon
What do you do? I am responsible for overseeing operations for the Individual Segment. This includes developing and executing the Segment strategy, our organic go to market position and approach, assessing inorganic growth opportunities and implementing our response to Healthcare Reform.
What do you want to be doing in 10 years? Ten years ago, I never thought I would be in the middle of one of the nation’s most significant changes. I hope ten years from now, I have the opportunity to be in the middle something as significant. Oh, and I want to be out in front leading the charge.
What is your biggest strength? I grew up on a farm in southeast Ohio. From an early age, hard work was a necessity and one of the primary factors for me being where I am today. I enjoy getting my hands dirty and learning how something works and then looking for ways to make it work even better.
Where do you go for new ideas? Everywhere, I am an observer. I like to watch and listen to things happen and then think about how they could happen differently. It could be as simple as a sign on a run during a business trip or something one of my daughters said that made me think.
What is the best advice you received? I once received a fortune that states “You are persistent in pursuing your goals.” I have this hanging up at my desk as a reminder that many of my pursuits will not come easy. Achieving a personal or professional goal takes perseverance and determination.
What service or charitable cause has your attention? Since I moved to Connecticut five years ago, I have been a member of Leadership Greater Hartford. I recently had the pleasure of completing the year-long Summit Program with fifteen other leaders from across our community. LGH has introduced me to several gems in our local area, including my favorite restaurant, Firebox in downtown Hartford.
