Rail cars to be modified to accommodate bike racks

Connecticut transportation officials say they will add bike racks on some Metro-North Railroad commuter trains this fall as part of a pilot program.

State officials say the racks, which will be added on the New Haven Line, would be joined by others if the pilot program is successful.

It is part of an effort to help more bicyclists ride the commuter trains and leave their cars at home to ease highway congestion and parking shortages at the stations.

A study is under way to determine how the number of bikes on trains can be boosted without reducing seats.

Passengers currently are restricted from bringing bikes on New Haven Line trains during peak hours, and conductors may bar them from crowded off-peak trains.
