A Rhode Island-based mental health therapist with clients in Connecticut has bought a vacant office building in West Hartford for $640,000.
Michael Stokes, a mental health counselor licensed to practice in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Florida, recently acquired 199 Oakwood Ave., from West Hartford Dynasty Cuisine Group LLC, which operates a seasoning company and three Chinese restaurants, including Song Restaurant at 74 LaSalle Road in town.
West Hartford Dynasty Cuisine Group sold the building after acquiring it for $640,000 in 2023.
Built in 1966, the three-story, 9,178-square-foot building is zoned BN for neighborhood business district but has been vacant since 2018. The building formerly was home to Desai Systems, a management consulting firm. It sits on 0.51 acres and has 36 parking spaces.
In an emailed response to questions from Hartford Business Journal, Stokes said the building “needs a ton of work,” which he plans to do.
“This will be an extensive project to bring the building back to life,” he said. “I purchased this as an investment property, so the use remains open until we get further with the foundation work needed to restore the building.”
He added that there currently are no plans to develop “a mental health facility at this location.”
Stokes’ counseling practice is based in Newport, Rhode Island, but he holds online sessions with patients in Connecticut and the three other states he is licensed in. His practice primarily helps individuals and couples overcome sexual and intimacy disorders.
Thomas Wilks, of O,R&L Commercial, represented West Hartford Dynasty Cuisine Group LLC in the deal, while Larry Levere of Sentry Commercial represented Stokes.
