Quinnipiac University officials cut the ribbon on the new $45 million Recreation & Wellness Center at the university’s main Hamden campus on Friday.
The 60,000-square-foot structure houses fitness facilities including dedicated studios for dance, yoga, spinning and aerobics, along with a 27-foot climbing wall and snack bar for smoothies and energy drinks.
Hartford HealthCare President and CEO Jeff Flaks was on hand Friday morning to inaugurate the building’s new Student Health Services facility, which is operated by the health system.
The new center also provides adaptive equipment, including upper-body exercisers and recumbent cross-trainers for people with disabilities.
Quinnipiac President Judy Olian has said the new center was created as a “holistic well-being project,” with a counseling center and programs that will help students sleep and eat better or even deal with financial challenges.
The new Recreation & Wellness Center is part of Olian’s ambitious 10-year building plan at Quinnipiac University, which has locations in Hamden’s Mount Carmel and York Hill neighborhoods and in North Haven.
