Quinnipiac University in Hamden will host Connecticut’s first NCAA Division I Women’s “Frozen Four” hockey tournament this weekend.
The school was selected in Nov. 2012 to host the tournament at its TD Bank Sports Center.
Other New England schools have previously hosted the tournament, including Providence College, the University of New Hampshire and Boston University.
The tournament will consist of two semi-final games on Friday — University of Minnesota vs. University of Wisconsin and Clarkson University vs. Mercyhurst University. The winner of each game will face off Sunday for the championship.
The tournament — combined with a USA Hockey coaches workshop in New Haven and Wallingford this weekend — is expected to bring 10,000 people to the area, according to the Connecticut Convention & Sports Bureau, which assisted QU and the NCAA with planning.
CCSB calculates the economic impact of the events to be $1.7 million. Area hotels have booked 2,000 individual room nights as a result, it said.
