QU med school inks affiliation with Waterbury Hospital

Quinnipiac University’s fledgling medical school, which held its first classes Monday, has signed a five-year clinical affiliation agreement with Waterbury Hospital, it announced.

Waterbury is the fifth clinical affiliate of the Frank H. Netter School of Medicine. The school’s primary partner is St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, and other partners include MidState Medical Center of Meriden and Jewish Senior Services of Fairfield. In addition, Hartford Hospital is a research partner.

Dr. Bruce Koeppen, dean of the school, said having multiple affiliates helps avoid having too many students at any one institution and also exposes them to a variety of care settings.

Under the agreement, the school will send medical students to Waterbury for clinical rotations under supervision of medical staff and doctors starting in 2015. Those supervising doctors will be appointed as clinical professors at the medical school.
