QU coders take home $15K in competition

Two teams of Quinnipiac University students won a total of $15,000 at a recent computer science contest in New York City, the school announced.

The awards were presented April 30 at a “Dream it. Code it. Win it.” event, launched by TradingScreen, the MIT Club of New York and The MIT Enterprise Forum of New York City to reward creativity and diversity in the computer science field.

A team of Quinnipiac students who developed an online service called Kricket won the third-place $10,000 prize. Kricket, inspired by town-gown tensions between students and Hamden residents, can be used to send anonymous text messages to neighbors who are being too loud.

Quinnipiac said the students will use the money to hire two full-time people to improve design and coding and to travel to college housing conferences

Meanwhile, sophomore Gabriela Gualpa won a $5,000 innovation prize for her web app Unbreak, which streamlines tenants’ work requests for property managers.

She will use the money to further develop the product and turn it into a mobile app.
