PURA to probe Verizon strike

Connecticut’s utilities regulator said Wednesday that it plans to probe a recently ended labor strike by Verizon workers in New York.

State law requires the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority to investigate any labor dispute at a public service company that results in a work stoppage of seven days or longer.

The point of the review will be to determine if Verizon earned “unreasonable” profits as a result of the stoppage and whether the quality of customer service suffered. The review could result in PURA ordering Verizon to refund money to its Connecticut customers.

Nearly 40,000 Verizon workers went on strike April 13, according to the New York Times, which said management and labor reached tentative agreements over Memorial Day weekend.
