PURA investigating electricity suppliers

State regulators have launched an investigation into the trade practices of three electricity suppliers doing business in Connecticut after receiving numerous customer complaints, filings state.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURA) is looking into whether Connecticut Gas & Electric Co., Direct Energy LLC and Starion Energy Inc. have violated state laws that forbid switching a customer’s supplier with his knowledge, known in the industry as “slamming,” and putting advertising supplements in electricity bills, among other things.

There are approximately 40 licensed electricity suppliers serving Connecticut markets, the result of industry deregulation in 1998.
