Pumpout facilities for boaters now free

In an effort to eliminate sewage along the Long Island Sound, Connecticut’s rivers and Candlewood Lake, pumpout services are now being provided to recreational boaters free of charge.

Known as the Clean Vessel Act, the program is funded by the Department of Energy & Environment Protection (DEEP), to make water cleaner along the Long Island Sound.

DEEP has also launched a new interactive map showing the location of each pumpout facility to help and encourage boaters to use the system. The map provides the location, hours of operation, and contact information of each pumpout facility.

In 2013, Connecticut marine facilities and pumpout boat programs helped keep 910,108 gallons of recreational boat sewage out of the Long Island Sound. Pumpout facilities previously charged a service fee of $5.
