Public meeting tonight on Grand Ave. bridge overhaul

City officials are hosting a public meeting tonight to discuss the planned $25.5 million overhaul of the Grand Avenue Bridge.

An informational meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Benjamin Jepson Magnet School, 15 Lexington Ave., New Haven.

City officials said topics will include the scope of the work; the impact on traffic and businesses; the project schedule; and finances. Officials will also answer questions from the public.

The movable swing bridge over the Quinnipiac River connects Fair Haven Heights to New Haven’s Fair Haven section and the rest of the city.

The project is being funded through a combination of federal, state and local sources. Plans call for new bridge abutments, approach spans, electrical and mechanical systems and rehabilitation of the swing span itself.

City officials expect to advertise for bids on the project later this winter. Construction could begin as soon as late fall and last up to two years.
