State hospital regulators have rescheduled a public hearing on a proposal from Connecticut Children’s Medical Center to close its 12-bed unit in Waterbury and relocate it to its Hartford campus.
State hospital regulators have rescheduled a public hearing on a proposal from Connecticut Children’s Medical Center to close its 12-bed unit in Waterbury and relocate it to its Hartford campus.
The hearing is now scheduled for Thursday.
CT Children’s filed an application in July 2025 seeking to determine whether a Certificate of Need is necessary to close the unit, which it has maintained at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury since 2008.
St. Mary’s is owned and operated by Trinity Health Of New England.
The children’s hospital has stated that the Waterbury unit has had “very low volume for a number of years, which indicates there is no longer a need” for it. It is seeking to relocate the unit to its campus at 282 Washington St. in Hartford.
The state Office of Health Strategy determined in August that a CON was necessary. CT Children’s filed its CON application in January, and OHS deemed the application complete in May.
On June 24, OHS announced it had scheduled a public hearing to be held virtually today.
One day later, however, officials rescheduled the hearing to Thursday at the request of CT Children’s “due to the unavailability of a witness,” according to the rescheduling notice.
OHS subsequently closed at the end of June as part of
changes that eliminated the agency and divided its responsibilities among several state departments, including the Department of Public Health.
The public hearing will now be conducted by DPH. It will be held virtually via a Microsoft Teams conference call. The technical portion of the meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m.; public comments will begin following that portion of the meeting.
Daniel J. Csuka, a DPH staff attorney, will serve as hearing officer.
