Wallingford’s Proton OnSite has been awarded a contract to supply its hydrogen technology to power fuel-cell buses in Foshan and Yunfu, China.
Its products, known as electrolyzers or hydrogen generators, integrate renewable sources of generation, convert surplus electricity to produce hydrogen, and store the hydrogen as energy for future use, according to the company website.
Three of the megawatt systems will ship this summer, and an additional 10 systems are planned to ship over the next 18 months, with the opportunity for more later. The agreement names Proton as the exclusive supplier of electrolyzers to Synergy, otherwise known as Guangdong Synergy Hydrogen Power Technology Co. Ltd.
Proton OnSite says the deal also opens discussions for a joint venture to manufacture a portion of Proton’s M Series electrolyzers in Foshan exclusively for the fueling market in China.
Robert Friedland, Proton president and CEO, said the Chinese cities’ governments “demonstrate great vision and leadership” by supporting green hydrogen use for their mass transit needs. “It’s exciting to see how this supports air quality initiatives while contributing to continued economic development,” Friedland said.
Ma Dongsheng Frank, CEO of Synergy, called the deal “a strategic step toward a broader hydrogen economy by providing the possibility to store renewable energy and excess power in the form of hydrogen.”
