Developer Morello Realty has detailed a plan for a new 42-unit multifamily development in Glastonbury, including 15 units of affordable housing.
The plan was criticized by several residents during a public hearing before the town’s Plan and Zoning Commission on Tuesday evening, while some spoke in support.
The 3.5-story building is planned for a lot at 36 Hopewell Road in south Glastonbury, which is already home to a six-unit multifamily building.
Glastonbury currently has 5.23% of its housing stock that is considered affordable, below the 10% trigger that provides an easing of zoning restrictions for developers who come forward with affordable housing plans.
Morello says its architectural plans are still in development and it is inviting comment from the town on the final appearance of the building.
Comments from the public centered around concerns about the increase in traffic the development would bring. Neighbors also believe the development will lower their property values.
Barry Abramowitz, who lives on Hopewell Road, told the meeting it’s “reprehensible” that Glastonbury has so little affordable housing, but he described the Morello plan as a “behemoth.”
“There’s no other large apartment buildings on Hopewell Road so I think it’s the wrong project for the wrong place,” he said. “We need better clarification on what can be built where. Come up with an affordable housing plan that puts us on a path to succeed rather than fight all the time.”
Other neighbors asked for a reduction in the number of units allowed on the site, while some speakers praised the project, saying it will bring economic development and greater diversity to the town.
The commission took no action on the plan. It may not make a final decision until the end of the year.
