Proposed Blue Plan to protect Long Island Sound

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy will propose a Long Island Sound Blue Plan that seeks to protect the natural and human resources along the state’s coastline.

The Blue Plan legislation calls on the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection and UConn to meet with relevant state agencies, academic institutions, and stakeholders to compile a list of the natural and human resources along the Sound, and then develop a plan to guide future uses of the Sound’s waters and submerged lands.

The legislation, which will come as part of Malloy’s legislative package later this month, expands upon the work down by the Connecticut/New York working group that has been preparing for spatial planning in the Sound.

The Blue Plan, if approved, would be developed over a number of year and subject to legislative approval. The proposal is modeled after similar coastline plans in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
