Praxair expands its India gas footprint

Praxair Inc. in Danbury deepened its presence in India’s with a deal to supply industrial gas to that nation’s leading steelmaker.

Praxair India won a contract to supply of gases to the Bhilai facility of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

Praxair India will build, own and operate two state-of-the-art cryogenic air separation units, each with a capacity of 1,250 metric tons per day. The air separation plant will include liquefaction equipment, allowing it to meet the growing demand for oxygen, nitrogen and argon in the central India market.

The plants are scheduled to start up in 2012. SAIL, Bhilai will use the gases to expand production capacity from 5 million to 7 million tons per year of crude steel for buildings, automobiles and other goods.

Praxair India has built large air separation plants to supply industrial gases for some of India’s major companies, including Tata Steel and Haldia Petrochemicals.

Praxair India is building and will own and operate hydrogen and nitrogen plants to supply the Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. refinery at Paradip, Orissa.
