Praxair builds out Southwest plant to meet fracking demand

Danbury chemical giant Praxair Inc. said it’s building a second nitrogen plant at one of its New Mexico facilities.

Praxair said the Kirtland plant will support growing demand for nitrogen in the San Juan basin, which includes parts of New Mexico and Colorado.

Demand is spurred by oil and gas operators, some of whom use nitrogen in hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.”

When complete, the facility will be able to produce 300 tons per day of liquid nitrogen, in addition to gaseous nitrogen.
