Pratt wraps up $1.1B F-35 engine deal

East Hartford jet-engine maker Pratt & Whitney Co. has wrapped up a $1.13 billion Pentagon contract to supply engines and spare parts for the F-35 Lightning II warplane — all but slamming the door shut on Connecticut rival General Electric Co.’s efforts to get a piece of that business.

Pratt and the Pentagon settled on a discounted price and terms for the contract originally awarded in July 2010, the engine maker said Monday. Deliveries will be begin later this year, Pratt said.

Pratt is a division of Hartford’s United Technologies Corp.

Versions of Pratt’s F135 powerplant will propel both the conventional runway takeoff and short takeoff/vertical landing versions of the Lightning II slated for delivery to armed services in the U.S., United Kingdom and The Netherlands.
