Pratt & Whitney’s Calio to succeed retiring pres. Leduc

East Hartford jet-engine maker Pratt & Whitney says Christopher T. Calio will become president when Robert L. “Bob” Leduc retires early next year.

Leduc spent more than 40 years in several segments of Pratt’s parent company, Farmington conglomerate United Technologies Corp. (UTC). He was appointed as Pratt’s president in Jan. 2016 after leading Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. for less than a year in 2015, when UTC sold the Stratford-based aircraft manufacturer to Lockheed Martin Corp.

“Bob has played a significant role in shaping Pratt & Whitney as we know it today,” UTC CEO and Chairman Gregory Hayes said in a statement.

“He transformed the engine company by driving excellence and empowerment throughout the organization while most recently leading its 40,000 employees through the entry into service of the GTF, F135 and PW800 programs,” Hayes continued. “Bob is one of the most esteemed leaders in aerospace and will leave a lasting imprint on Pratt & Whitney.”

Hayes said Leduc and Calio will work together during the transition over the coming months.

Calio, who was once Hayes’ chief of staff, has served as president of Pratt’s commercial engines business since 2017, overseeing development, program management, sales, customer support and aftermarket services for commercial engines.

Calio joined UTC in 2005 and served in positions of increasing responsibility across the corporation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Hartford’s Trinity College, and an MBA and law degrees from UConn.

Tuesday’s announcement comes more than two weeks after UTC said it will merge with Mass.-based Raytheon Co. to create an aerospace and defense giant. The combined company would be headquartered in an undetermined location in Greater Boston.
