Pratt & Whitney working with Air bp on sustainable fuel testing and research

East Hartford jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney has signed a memorandum of understanding with Air bp to collaborate on applying sustainable aviation fuel blends in engines, company officials announced.

Per the new agreement, Pratt and Air bp will explore the viability of using blends of sustainable aviation fuels, or SAFs, up to 100% for engine testing through 2024. The companies will also research the performance of 100% SAF blends in propulsion systems to learn how the fuel performs and reduces emissions.

Pratt said it has been working to ensure its engines can someday operate with 100% SAF, so this is another partnership that reflects that. The aerospace industry has a goal to reach net zero CO2 emissions for air travel by 2050.

Pratt also recently announced that it’s opening a new capabilities center in India this year.
