Aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney received the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection GreenCircle Award on Monday for reducing pollution at its East Hartford facility and headquarters.
Since 2006, Pratt & Whitney reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 22 percent, water usage by 26 percent and air emissions by 56 percent. The effort is part of United Technologies’ plan to reduce toxic emissions and meet pollution prevention goals. Pratt & Whitney is a subsidiary of Hartford-based United Technologies.
“Pratt & Whitney is committed to environmental leadership and we are continually looking for ways to reduce our global environmental footprint,” said Jerry Tarnacki, vice president of Pratt & Whitney quality and environmental health & safety, in a statement.
The Siemon Company in Watertown and Bristol Meyers Squibb in Wallingford also were among the 28 recipients of the GreenCircle award for their accomplishments in 2009. The awards are given for advances in energy conservation, transportation, pollution prevention, recycling, conservation and environmental awareness.
