Pratt & Whitney announces new engine sales, launches engine upgrade technology

Pratt & Whitney has announced new long-term deals with Frontier Airlines and Cebu Pacific.

The East Hartford jet engine maker has also announced the availability of a new engine upgrade for partner airlines using its geared turbofan (GTF) engine.

Frontier Airlines has selected Pratt & Whitney GTF engines to power 91 Airbus A321neo aircraft, with the first currently scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Pratt will also provide Frontier with engine maintenance through a long-term service agreement. This latest order brings the airline’s total commitment to 235 GTF-powered A320neo planes, including already delivered aircraft.

Meanwhile, Cebu Pacific has signed a maintenance services agreement for the airline’s GTF engine fleet.

Currently, Cebu Pacific operates 56 Pratt & Whitney powered aircraft, but the 12-year agreement also provides support for the almost 170 engines the airline ordered in 2024.

Pratt & Whitney also used the venue of the Paris Air Show to unveil an engine upgrade that it’s calling GTF Hot Section Plus.

The company says the upgrade, which it’s offering for the PW1100G-JM engine that powers the Airbus A320neo aircraft family, nearly doubles the “time on wing” for the engine.

Time on wing is a measure of the operational reliability of an engine. The technology for the upgrade has been adapted from the company’s next generation GTF Advantage engine.

The Hot Section Plus upgrade can be incorporated into existing engines during maintenance visits, and Pratt says it will begin installations for existing customers next year.
