East Hartford jet engine builder Pratt & Whitney will provide $8 million for an advanced additive manufacturing laboratory at the University of Connecticut’s Depot Campus in Storrs.
The school and the manufacturer will announce the details of the center at an event Friday afternoon, but the two are calling the center one of the nation’s most advanced additive manufacturing labs. Announcing the center will be Paul Adams, Pratt’s chief operating officer; UConn President Susan Herbst; and Catherine Smith, commissioner of the state Department of Economic and Community Development.
The partners are opening the Pratt & Whitney Additive Manufacturing Innovation Center to support President Barrack Obama’s advanced manufacturing partnership initiative. The plan encourages collaboration between industry, universities, and the federal government to increase the nation’s global competitiveness.
Pratt is a subsidiary of Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp.
The center will be located at the Longley Building at UConn’s Depot Campus at 270 Middle Turnpike in Storrs.
