Pratt-powered Canadian airliner OK’d

Canadian airframe maker Bombardier Commercial Aircraft has won flight certification from its home nation’s aerospace overseer for its CS100 jetliner that will bear Pratt & Whitney Co.’s geared turbofan engines.

Bombardier Commercial President Fred Cromer said Friday the Transport Canada certified its single-aisle, twin-engine jetliner following more than 3,000 hours of flight testing.

The certification paves way for air carrier Swiss to be the first to put the CS100 into service in the second quarter of 2016, Cromer said.

In a separate statement Friday, Pratt Commercial Engines President Greg Gernhardt lauded the CS100’s clearance as a “historic milestone’’ for both Bombardier and Pratt, maker of the fuel-efficient, low-noise PurePower geared turbofan.
