Pratt machinists narrowly approve three-year deal

After recommending Friday that its members reject the terms of a three-year contract offered by Pratt & Whitney, union machinists at the company voted Sunday in favor of the deal 1,119 to 1,037, according to the union and company.

The contract, which takes effect today, provides 2.5-percent annual raises to members of locals 700 and 1746 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Pratt said in an announcement.

The trade-off for machinists is there will be more than 100 layoffs, as Pratt outsources some of its material handling work to a third party.

The contract also includes a $7 monthly increase in pension benefits, a $6 increase in weekly 401(k) contributions and no new medical cost increases until 2015.
