Pratt inks turbofan risk-sharing agreement

East Hartford aerospace engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney said it has inked a risk and revenue-sharing agreement for its PurePower Geared Turbofan engines with Japanese heavy equipment maker Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

Under the deal, which aerospace contractors use to spread out their financial risk, Kawasaki will provide hardware modules for the engines.

Terms were not disclosed.

Pratt said it has 10 turbofan partners around the world, which will provide hardware and testing services valued at more than $49 billion over the life of the programs they are working on.

Besides Mitsubishi, other partners include MTU Aero Engines, Japanese Aero Engines Corp., Industria Turbo Propulsores of Spain, Singapore Airlines Engineering Co., IHI Corp., and GE Avio.

The partners are working on turbofan engines for aircraft programs directed by Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp., Bombardier Aerospace, Airbus, Irkut and Embraer.
