Pratt inks $780+M deals at air show

East Hartford jet-engine builder Pratt & Whitney Co. announced Monday engine orders totaling more than $780 million with Malaysian and Brazilian airlines.

Announcement of these and other deals signaled that Pratt and its United Technologies aerospace affiliates were off to a strong start hawking their wares and services at the week-long Farnborough Air Show in England.

Pratt said Malaysia Airlines chose its PW4170 engine to power 17 new Airbus A330 aircraft. Delivery of the engines, with list prices of about $680 million, for 15 passenger and two freighter aircraft will start in 2011, the company said. Built in France, the A330 is a twin-engine aircraft capable of medium- or long-range flights.

In the other engine deal, TAM Linhas Aereas SA signed a 12-year engine contract calling for Pratt to deliver its PW4000-100 engines to power two new Airbus A330s The new order is in addition to engines to power eight new A330s already announced.

Pratt also signed a two-year extension with JetBlue Airways, Bradley International’s newest airline, to clean the low-cost air carrier’s engine fleet. It signed a similar agreement with Air India.

JetBlue inked the deal for Pratt’s EcoPower engine washes after successful outings last year at its New York City, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale airports that saved four million pounds of fuel and eliminated 5,600 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Pratt also announced Monday a cleaning contract with Air India at the Farnborough Air Show The contract extension allows JetBlue to use the engine washes at those three airports with the option to add up to 13 more. The low-cost airline in November will officially expand its service to Bradley, with scheduled flights to Florida.

In addition to boosting fuel economy and cutting emissions, Pratt claims periodic engine washing cuts operating temperatures, improving the time an engine stays on a wing without maintenance.
