East Hartford jet-engine maker Pratt & Whitney is expanding its footprint in Latin America, announcing this week it plans to build a new overhaul facility in Brazil.
Pratt, a subsidiary of Farmington’s United Technologies Corp. (UTC), said the facility in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, will focus on inspecting and repairing PT6A and PW200 engines, which power more than 1,300 aircraft in the country.
The aerospace company did not disclose how much it plans to invest in the new facility, or how many jobs it will create when it debuts by year-end 2019.
Pratt says the build-out is being made possible through a partnership with Brazilian firm Indύstria de Aviação e Serviços (IAS). The firm’s investment or other potential contributions were not detailed in the announcement.
The new overhaul facility will add to Pratt’s existing service network in Brazil. It currently operates an inspection and parts distribution center more than 400 miles south along South America’s eastern coastline in Sorocaba, among other facilities in the country.
