Pratt engine powers Canadian jet’s first flight

Pratt & Whitney said its PurePower engine on Monday powered the maiden flight of Canadian jet maker Bombardier’s CSeries plane in Quebec.

The CSeries is the first narrow-body plane of its size to be developed in decades, according to Reuters. The plane has a single passenger aisle and a 115-foot wingspan.

Bombardier hopes to compete with several major plane makers, including Boeing and Airbus. The company said the Pratt engine will increase fuel efficiency by 16 percent and engine operating costs by 20 percent.

For Pratt, a United Technologies company, the flight represents the first of six new programs that will use its Turbofan engine architecture.
