Pratt engine earns climate honor

East Hartford jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney on Wednesday had its new PurePower line of engines honored as an Aviation Climate Solution by the Air Transport Action Group at a sustainability summit in Switzerland.

The PurePower geared turbofan engine is part of a collection of 100 examples of Aviation Climate Solutions that are cutting carbon dioxide emissions in the aviation industry.

The geared turbofan reduces fuel burn and cuts carbon emissions by 16 percent and reduces noise from the engine by 75 percent, according to Pratt.

Pratt is rolling out five versions of the PurePower for various types of aircraft, including the Airbus A320neo single-aisle airplane, which is the most used style of airplane used by passenger airlines.
