Pratt battles Blumenthal over jobs

East Hartford jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney Co. is fighting Attorney General Richard Blumenthal‘s legal effort to help workers block the move of 1,000 jobs from the state.

Pratt, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. in Hartford, says in a brief filed in U.S. District Court that Blumenthal’s request to file a friend of the court brief backing the International Association of Machinists is partisan.

In a statement early this afternoon, Blumenthal called Pratt’s opposition to his intervention “regrettable.”

“As a friend of the court,” he said, “we are ready to show that Pratt failed to seriously consider the governor’s proposed $100 million package and otherwise bargain in good faith as required by law.”

The union, which represents 3,700 Pratt workers, has sued the company to halt plans to move jobs to Columbus, Ga., Singapore and Japan. The two parties are in a dispute over whether Pratt complied with its union contract requiring it to make every effort to preserve jobs. (AP)
