Power outages hit New Haven on hottest day of year

Power outages have hit New Haven on the hottest day of the year, The Associated Press reports. Northeast Utilities’ Connecticut Light & Power unit reports 433 customers without power, mostly in Darien.

A spokeswoman for The United Illuminating Company says an unknown power cable problem left about 1,800 customers without electricity early Tuesday afternoon in the area of Water Street and Union Avenue south of the downtown area. That’s about 3 percent of the city’s 54,000 United Illuminating customers.

UI spokeswoman Anita Steeves says power should be restored by mid-afternoon.

CL&P spokesman Mitch Gross described Tuesday as a ”high demand day as far as power but not a record.”

The National Weather Service says temperatures in southern Connecticut are expected to hit the low 90s Tuesday afternoon, making it the hottest day of the year in the region. Forecasters say high humidity will make it feel like the high 90s.

The outages are in an area mixed with commercial and residential properties.
