Port study calls for more exports, increased services

A Connecticut Deep Water Port Strategy Study released Thursday afternoon calls for the state’s three deep water ports to increase exports, imports, and marine services.

The report commissioned by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy earlier this year was the starting point of developing a strategy under his administration to increase economic activity at the Bridgeport, New Haven, and New London ports.

The recommendations include expansion of services at all three ports, such as ship repiar services and energy storage, as well as expansions at the individual ports, such as private ferry services in Bridgeport and New London, and dry cargo at New Haven and New London.

The report also recommends growing the ports’ services into scrap metal exports in New Haven, wood pellet exports in New London, lumber, copper, and steel imports in New Haven or New London, and fresh food imports in New Haven and New London.

In addition to using the report to develop long-term economic strategy, the Connecticut Department of Transportation will use the recommendations when soliciting a new operator for the state pier in New London.

The report was written by California marine consultant Moffatt & Nichol, along with DOT, the Office of Policy & Management, the Department of Economic & Community Development, and the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection.
