Popular Hamden pub closes for good

Dunn’s Pub in Hamden announced this week that it is closing after 14 years in business.

The business let customers know about the decision in a Facebook post earlier this week.

“To all our loyal customers and friends, after careful consideration, we have decided not to reopen Dunn’s,” the announcement said. “We’ve enjoyed a great 14 year run providing a local pub atmosphere for all to enjoy.”

The business is owned by the Lubowicki family, who thanked those who have offered support and laughed and raised pints with them over the years.

The pub, at 2345 Whitney Ave., had closed in March along with all the other bars and restaurants around the state, per Gov. Ned Lamont’s executive order due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The business had still been trying to continue in recent weeks, including advertising that it was available for takeout even though it couldn’t serve customers indoors.

Phase 2 of the Governor’s plan started allowing 50 percent indoor dining at restaurants on June 17. However, bars fall under Phase 3 of the reopening plan, and aren’t expected to be allowed to reopen until sometime in mid-July.

The community has posted hundreds of comments on Facebook expressing dismay at the business’ closure, sharing fond memories and wishing everyone well.

Kate DiChello Davies wrote, “We are crushed! Our family has had so many memories at what you made into our very own Cheers… and then some. Always welcome. Always a good tune on the jukebox. Always a good conversation. Sending so many positive wishes your way in the next leg of life!”

Nancy Dudchik, president of the Hamden Regional Chamber of Commerce, wrote, “We are so sad to see this great Hamden business close their doors! Thank you Dunn’s Pub for your many contributions to the community for 14 years!”
